The papers and official documents of Manuel Armijo, the last Mexican Governor of New Mexico, that came into the possession of the United States at the end of the Mexican War. They pertain to his military career and adminstration as Governor of New Mexico. In 1878, the United States Government asked the Mexican Office of Foreign Affairs whether it had any records on file referring to special powers given to Manuel Armijo to make land-grants.

Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil was probably born on March 1, 1795 in Orizaba, Veracruz, although some sources report his birth date as 1789 or 1801. As an adult he became a Mexican Army general and politician, eventually serving as Minister of War. He allied with and helped the frequent return to power of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna despite defeats in the 1836 Texas revolution and the 1846-48 Mexican-American War.
